CME Group futures markets are closed on Friday, January 1, 2027, in observance of New Year’s Day. This includes equity index futures, interest rate futures, energy, metals and agricultural contracts traded on CME, CBOT, NYMEX and COMEX. Any resting orders will remain queued and will not be matched until trading resumes, and no new positions can be opened or closed on the exchange during the closure. Regular CME Globex hours are 5:00 pm to 4:00 pm CT, Sunday through Friday, with a daily maintenance break between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm CT; that overnight session simply does not open ahead of the holiday. Traders wanting the full year’s schedule can check the CME Futures holiday calendar.
Because January 1, 2027 falls on a Friday, the closure runs into the weekend, so futures markets do not reopen until the Sunday evening session that begins the following week’s trading.

Is the market open the day before and after?
Thursday, December 31, 2026 is a full trading day on CME futures with regular hours, and no early close is scheduled for CME on New Year’s Eve in the exchange’s published calendar. Some fixed income desks may still shorten internal trading ahead of the holiday, but the futures exchange itself runs its normal 5:00 pm to 4:00 pm CT session. Trading resumes as usual for the week beginning Sunday evening, January 3, 2027, when the Globex session reopens ahead of Monday, January 4, 2027’s full trading day.
Why do markets close for New Year’s Day?
New Year’s Day has been observed as a US federal holiday since the nineteenth century, and exchanges built their holiday calendars around the same federal schedule that closes banks, government offices and post offices. Financial markets close on New Year’s Day partly out of tradition and partly for practical reasons: staffing, clearing and settlement systems, and connections to other closed markets such as banks and government bond dealers, make a full trading day impractical when so much of the surrounding financial infrastructure is also shut.
What It Means for Your Money
If you have a working order in futures or place one while the market is closed, it simply queues and will not be executed until trading reopens, so prices could move before your order is filled. Settlement of any trades from December 31, 2026 is not affected by the holiday itself, but because the exchange is shut, no new settlement cycle runs on January 1. Contracts with December-based expiries or rolls should already have been handled before the holiday, so check your broker’s specific roll calendar if you hold futures positions. Bank transfers, wire payments and payroll processing that rely on the Federal Reserve’s banking system will also be delayed, since US banks are closed for the federal holiday. Cryptocurrency markets remain open and continue trading 24/7 regardless of the holiday, so digital asset prices can still move while traditional futures markets are shut.
