A free Finance Calendar API key raises your daily limit from 2,000 requests per IP address to 10,000 and tells us what you are building. You get one with a single POST request, and it is emailed to you as well.
Keys are optional. Every endpoint of the Finance Calendar API works without one. A key is for apps that make more than 2,000 calls a day, for shared networks where many users sit behind one IP address, and for anyone who wants usage figures per endpoint.
What a key gives you
- 10,000 requests a day instead of 2,000, counted per key rather than per IP address.
- A usage report at
/keys/me: calls today, calls remaining, and calls per endpoint over the last 30 days. Reading it is never counted against your limit. - The same data as keyless calls. There are no key-only fields or endpoints.
Get a key with curl
Send your email address and, optionally, your name, what you are building and your website. The response is HTTP 201 with the key. It is shown once and sent to the email address you gave.
curl -X POST "https://www.financecalendar.com/wp-json/fc/v1/keys" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"email":"[email protected]","name":"Your name","use_case":"Trading dashboard","website":"https://example.com"}'
The response:
{
"key": "fc_live_...",
"tier": "free",
"daily_limit": 10000,
"message": "Keep this key; it is shown once and has been emailed to you.",
"docs": "https://www.financecalendar.com/api/"
}
Keys look like fc_live_ followed by 32 hexadecimal characters. Each email address can hold 3 active keys, and each IP address can create 5 keys a day.
Use the key
Send it as an X-API-Key header, as an Authorization: Bearer header, or as an api_key query parameter. The header is the better choice because query strings end up in logs.
curl "https://www.financecalendar.com/wp-json/fc/v1/calendar?impact=high" \
-H "X-API-Key: fc_live_..."
The CLI and MCP server read the key from the FC_API_KEY environment variable; see the MCP server page.
Check your usage
curl "https://www.financecalendar.com/wp-json/fc/v1/keys/me" -H "X-API-Key: fc_live_..."
This returns your key prefix, email, tier, status, daily_limit, used_today, remaining_today, resets_at, created_at, last_used_at, requests_total and last_30_days_by_endpoint. Without a valid key it returns HTTP 401 with the message “Send your key as X-API-Key (or ?api_key=).”
Limits and headers
| Tier | Requests per day | How to get it |
|---|---|---|
| Keyless | 2,000 per IP address | Nothing to do |
| Free key | 10,000 | The curl command above |
| Pro | 100,000 | Pricing |
| Business | 1,000,000 | Pricing |
Limits reset at 00:00 UTC. Every API response carries 4 headers: X-RateLimit-Limit, X-RateLimit-Remaining, X-RateLimit-Reset (a Unix timestamp) and X-RateLimit-Tier (keyless, free, pro or business). When the limit is reached you get HTTP 429 with a Retry-After header in seconds:
{
"error": "Daily limit of 10,000 requests reached for this key. It resets at 00:00 UTC. Need more? https://www.financecalendar.com/api/pricing/",
"docs": "https://www.financecalendar.com/api/"
}
Responses are cached for 5 minutes, so polling the same URL more often than that returns the same data and still counts against your limit. For a stream of updates, poll /changes instead, or download the full dataset once an hour.
Key errors
- 401: the key is not in the expected format, or it is unknown. Check for a typo, or call without a key.
- 403: the key has been revoked. Contact us via the about page.
- 429 on signup: more than 5 signups from one IP address in a day.
Revocation and privacy
To revoke a key, email us from the address it was issued to and we will disable it. A revoked key returns HTTP 403 on every call; keyless calls from the same machine keep working. If you need a key reset because an address already holds 3, say so in the same email.
We store the email address, name, use case and website you give us, a hash of the key (not the key itself), and request counts per day and per endpoint. Request parameters are not logged against your key. Usage counts are kept for 90 days.
Frequently asked questions
Does a key change the data I get?
No. Keyed and keyless calls return exactly the same rows and fields. A key only changes the daily limit and gives you a usage report.
Can I use one key in several apps?
Yes, but the 10,000 daily limit is shared. Each email address can hold 3 active keys, so a key per app is usually the better arrangement.
What happens at 2,000 keyless requests?
The API returns HTTP 429 until 00:00 UTC. The error message tells you where to get a free key. Nothing is blocked permanently.
Is my key visible to other people?
Only if you put it in client-side code. The API accepts keyless calls from browsers, so for a public web page call without a key and let the visitor’s IP address carry the limit.
